Clay embodies so many of my passions. It is our collective portal to the grand tombs and modest hearths of the ancients. It’s soft plasticity recalls the body and records the touch. To work in clay is to dabble with geologic time, to make objects which will endure thousands of years beyond their makers. To work in clay is also to work in community. Seasoned throwers and young sculptors all gathered around the primeval kiln fire. There are so many lessons to this practice, so many instances of transformation, so many failed or exceeded expectations, culminating in the ultimate surrender to the ancient kiln gods.
